Post 2: The Sovereign's Order: Judaism and the Taming of the Deep

 

The cycle is endless

🌏 “He made peace in His heights, and by His power He changes them, turning them round and round.”

✡️ Covenant and Law

The Covenant and the Law are not only for the people; they are also for Creation. 

Tohu va-bohu—chaotic emptiness—sprawled over tehom, the boundless, dark waters of the deep. And God's spirit hovered over them.

In the Jewish sacred scriptures, it tells us that the breath of God moved over the deep, and things began to change. 

Into the story comes Lady Wisdom: Chokhmah, the master craftswoman who stood beside God and created all that was created and built all that was built. 

The infinite power of the universe understood the necessity of the feminine hand of God in the creation that we now inhabit.

Sacred Jewish time is cyclic time. More than that, it is cyclic time based upon the moon 🌙, the symbol of feminine power. 

I realize that very few of you reading this blog will ever read the Old and New Testament of the Christian faith, the Jewish sacred scriptures, or the Islamic sacred scriptures. 

So be it; I haven't read them all either. However, I would suggest that if you find something puzzling or intriguing in what I'm writing, simply highlight it, right-click it, and search the web 🌐. 

It takes but a moment, and it may make all of this a little more sensible to you.

🔄 The Universal Cycle

The cycle I'm talking about today—and in this whole series—is the cycle of the universe moving from chaos, from bits and pieces of flotsam, to a place of refuge, of security, of oneness with the infinite power. 

And then, almost inevitably, it seems, comes the fall from grace and back to chaos, where the cycle starts again.

Some would call that creative power God, others Allah, and still others might simply name it, Chi.

Look to the Jewish Sacred Scriptures 📜📜 

You will see the cycle of destruction and creation out of the ensuing chaos in the story of Noah and the great flood 🌊.

🌱 My Understanding

Bluntly put humans always screw things up! 

But there are the law and the Covenant that apply to the universe and as we are part of the universe they apply to us also. If the Covenant and the Law are lived, humans can live within the sacred cycle.

I'm not entirely sure that this would end the cycle. In my mind, I see a never-ending cycle of death, regeneration, rebirth, death—and on and on and on. 

Of course, I could be entirely mistaken.

But when I look in my garden 🌿, I see the trees and the plants: they grow, get old, mature, die, and when we let them, they return to the soil to once again generate the cycle of life. 

When I look at the seasons 🍂❄️🌸☀️, I see winter, and everything begins to die. Spring comes, the snows go away, the grass becomes green, and new growth is everywhere. The grass matures, grows old, and dies in the fall. And once again, we have winter. 

I do not live long enough to know if this cycle continues in the greater universe ✨. 

Science may say no; it’s ever-expanding. But science also says no; it expands, and shrinks, and expands and shrinks. 

So, I choose, with the best information I have at hand, to believe that the cycle continues in the greater universe.

🕊️ My Conclusion

I see in Judaism and Buddhism the same core belief of cycles: cyclic time. 

In my next post, I will be exploring Christianity, the child of Judaism. 

I believe that Christianity will follow its mother and also be cycling—but for that, I'll need some proof rather than just my own opinion. 

Here's hoping I can find it, and you can agree or disagree.
