60 Food Plants Where Before There Would Have Been 4

Because it is such a good day for transplanting I'll be using the above image from Day 1 of our Vertical Gardening Experiment.

Since this picture was taken, give or take a month ago, the green onions have straightened up, 3 out of 4 cherry tomato cuttings did not make it but the one remaining is bearing fruit, the ginger is doing well and 3 out of 4 Bell Peppers are coming along nicely.

Everything seems to be going as hoped for. So, we just finished transplanting into our fourth laundry basket. The vertical garden is now growing cherry tomatoes, green onions, Bell peppers, eggplant, bitter gourd, okra and ginger. Rough count, 60 plants where before we would have had 4.

Aside from more food vertical planting comes with serious advantages over what we have tried before. Watering by filling up the bamboo post with veggie scraps and pond water guarantees good plant nutrition. It also waters and composts deeply which means less work during heat waves. We are multi cropping rather than monocropping which should keep the loss to bugs down. One final advantage for an old man who can't get down too low or reach too high, being able to water, weed, harvest and putter at a comfortable height and in a safe way is a seriously good deal.

We are going to continue to transfer over to vertical gardening. If the gods are willing, by the end of the year we will have 100 vertical gardening containers producing veggies enough for our 3 families.
