To: Family And Friends ~ Why Cursive?

 Aug 23, 2024

Let us see if this works. If it does, I’m well ahead of the game. If not? Well, let us just see before we go to the dark side. The transfer worked well!

Now for a deep dive into the promised ‘why use cursive rabbit hole.

  • Back in 1957 I entered grade 1. The mainstay of my schooling was aimed at turning me into a solid citizen. Many would argue that they failed miserably.

  • Successful or not, many a long hour was spent at attempting to master the MacLean's method of cursive writing.

  • This was a big deal in grade school formatting for the same reason that at least one Catholic religious order uses the mastering of the cursive form as a training tool.  After hours upon hours of practice, to receive even just a smattering of praise from a ‘Boss’ is a marvelous experience. For anyone being trained for a semi robotic life, mastering cursive writing is a good starting point.

  • Enough of the dark side. Let us not forget that there is little as meaningful to a person far from a loved one than to receive a letter written by a well-loved hand. The shape of the letters, the scent of the ink and paper, the realization that your loved one handled the very pages you are caressing with your eyes. Just so much more sacred than a letter typed out or an email.

  • Jane Austen, my favorite author, wrote her personal letters in a beautiful cursive script.

  • I’ll finish off this not exhaustive list by pointing out that my blog and my motorcycles' never look like the norm. There is always a uniqueness to them. Call it a personal style, if you will.
