Rick, You See Things Honestly
September 18, 2024,
Hi, a little background... Rick and I are of a generation, and we have been friends since high school. We are both pre PC and born into the New Golden Atomic Age.
What happened? |
I'm getting too old for this.

Everyone said when we reached our age that these would be our golden years. The best that I see is gold-plated that is tarnishing.

World War 2 had ended with the atomic bombing of Japan. Little Boy and Fat Man were beyond the ken of nearly the entire world. There may have been half a dozen people who truly understood what it meant to split the atom. For the rest of us... well, how many people today understand computer chips or the web? Damn few. Now as then, most people just follow technology they don't, we don't, I don't really understand it.
What I do 'remember' is how the powers that be tried to make us have faith in the promise of the New Golden Atomic Age. For a crash course on cultural brainwashing, do some binge-watching of The Flintstones and The Jetsons. This is a letter, not an academic paper, so if you're interested you can find them on YouTube. You can also check out the government propaganda where we were all told that if we would only duck and cover under our school desks we would nicely survive an Atomic Attack by those nasty Soviets.
The atom was going to give us free energy. Robots were going to take over grunt work. Flying cars powered by atomic pills. Cancer cured and a chicken in every pot! We bought it hook, line and sinker. I imagine that first big mistake of trusting government might have been what shaped our generation?
Here's how we turned out, in round numbers;
- 25% are dead
- 10% of the survivors live near or below the official poverty level in Canada
- 17% are upper middle class or better.
- that means about 6 out of 10 are working middle class.
- today a working middle class means both parents are in the work force and buying a house is really hard to do.
You are right Rick. The only question is; knowing that we were lied to, do we become old bitter people or do we give the Bird to those that lied and try to live a good life? Personally... I'm trying to live the good life by not letting the lies of the past destroy the beauty of now.
Admittedly, this is harder to do on days when Rusty sucker punches me and the back gives me trouble... but I'm trying!
