Waking Up To Thick Fog And A Hungry Turtle

 December 22, 2024

Friends and family, When I woke up this morning it was a flashback to Ivory Island, We were down to a quarter mile visibility in fog. I seriously needed to suppress my desire to turn on the fog horn! Then the wind came up, the clouds lifted, and it was time to feed the geese and fish.

Breakfast
At the upper pond, the fish were happy. Min had harvested about half the fish the day before, and the ones left behind were enjoying the extra room. Heading down to the lower pond, I noted the cherry tomatoes that needed picking and continued on my way.

The geese being natural-born diggers have turned the lower pond area into a mudhole when it rains, and we are in the rainy season. Translation; the geese were not virgin white but an off-white/mud brown colour.

Dirty or clean, they are always happy to have the corn spread around. And even happier when they waddle into the pond to steal the fish food. But they have more competition for the pellets than just the tilapia. They also have to contend with the young turtles.

Today, as I waited and watched in the light drizzle, I saw one of them. Near the rock garden area a small egg shaped, muddy water coloured object was slowly surfacing and diving where I had thrown some of the fish food.

As I watched, she poked her head out of the water and surveyed the scene. Then, ever so slowly and methodically, she started munching on the fish pellets. It has been a week or so since I saw the young turtles, and she has grown a bit. I have no idea what her fate will be. But ever the optimist, I'm hoping that over the next five or so years she may grow to fifteen inches long.

And that's enough for this morning's post.
